We started The Cozy Corner with a simple belief: If we put our values first, the rest will follow.
We are a community focused eco-friendly café with a passion for sustainability, inclusiveness, and making a genuine difference. Everything we do, from the food we serve to the events we support, is guided by the belief that our small business can drive big change.
Our café is a training ground for local youth, with seven teenagers currently gaining real-world skills, mentorship, and the confidence to grow. We invest in our team through upskilling, tutoring, and life-skills coaching, creating opportunities that extend far beyond our walls. Students from diverse backgrounds gain skills with us through work experience.
Giving back is simply part of who we are and our community support is as varied as it is heartfelt: Sponsoring Taupō Pride, Greening Taupō, ACT2 productions, school fundraisers and much, much more. We offer our venue free to start-ups, charities, and educators. We have donated thousands of dollars to local projects and causes over the years while also offering hands on help through volunteering and event participation.
Environmental responsibility is at the core of our operations. We divert over 86% of our waste from landfill, compost through local worm farms, repurpose coffee grounds for community projects, and champion zero waste initiatives like reusable cup schemes and upcycled takeaway jars. Wherever possible, we source locally, reduce packaging, and use whole ingredient cooking to minimise food waste.
Our café has a big heart. Our efforts are recognized locally and nationally at annual award ceremonies:
· Our grill is scrubbed clean using pumice from the lake rather than using strong chemicals.
· Guests can “pay it forward” in aid of Taupo Hospice.
· We avoid packaging that can’t be composted or recycled.
· Always happy to donate vouchers supporting local community events.
· Our food scraps are collected by a local farmer and our used coffee grounds are available for the local gardeners.
